Fanshawe is a medium size consultancy, providing a client focused service with access to a director at all times.. We assist in delivering solutions appropriate to the function and budget expectations of our clients. The practice employs professionals with a wide range of skills including cost consultants, project managers and specialist building services cost consultants.

Approach

We take a hands-on approach to the challenges which are presented on each project and are able to tailor our services to meet the needs of our Clients. Our success is based on analysing our Clients’ objectives and then combining practical industry knowledge with the energy, skill and the level of passion and commitment necessary for each task. This approach enables us to respond to the changing requirements of our Clients.

We are a dedicated, enthusiastic and professional multi-skilled team with extensive experience of completing complex and challenging projects across a range of market sectors and are focused on delivering our projects to the appropriate quality on time and within budget. The practice employs people with a wide range of business skills - including project managers, cost consultants, building services cost consultants. We aim to understand how our Clients run their businesses and to deliver solutions to provide long term benefits.

Fanshawe has significant experience of managing pre-established consultant teams and in recent years have been appointed on several projects where an incumbent consultant’s appointed has been terminated.

Most importantly, we appreciate that our Clients’ projects have a before and after and need to be carefully managed at all stages to ensure a successful conclusion. We actually care about the service we offer and make every effort to ensure that every project is successfully delivered.

History

For over seventy years Fanshawe has provided expert project and cost consultancy services on construction projects in the public and private sectors.

Fanshawe is a medium size consultancy practice, with an established track record of working within historic, educational, leisure, scientific, commercial offices and public access buildings. Our knowledge and experience of this type of work enables us to understand the key requirements of our Clients. We will assist in delivering solutions to meet the Clients brief, on time and within budget whilst always providing value for money.

Understanding the need to provide economic ‘cost-in-use’ and ‘value-for-money’ solutions lie at the heart of our business. That is why we employ people with a wide range of business skills – from development appraisal to whole life costing – from programme management to project management – from strategic property advice to value and risk management. DIRECTORS

Darryl Trott
(MRICS)

DIRECTOR  Darryl has 30 years’ experience providing quantity surveying and cost consultancy advice to a wide range of clients across the UK and Europe. Darryl has extensive experience in managing complex and challenging projects in the Commercial Sector for Developers, Landlords, Funds and Tenants. Darryl joined Fanshawe in 1992 and early on specialised in Category A projects that also included heavy refurbishments and extending existing properties as well as Category B Fit Out project for tenants. Darryl also manages the Fanshawe Reinstatement Cost Assessment (Fire Insurance Valuations) services.

Darryl is a very committed individual and will do what is necessary to achieve the results required.  He is successful through a proven approach to negotiation and an excellent working experience of all procurement routes.  Darryl has a history of providing accurate cost advice from the initial stages and delivering the commercial result promised.

Rupert Symmons
(FRICS)

DIRECTOR Rupert has over 30 years’ experience providing project management and cost consultancy advise to a wide range of clients across the UK. Rupert has unrivalled experience in managing complex and challenging projects in the heritage buildings for private building owners, estates, trusts and charities. In addition, Rupert also has significant experience of providing advice to clients in the education, super prime and high-end residential, public access and leisure sectors. Rupert has also acted as expert witness on a number of significant construction litigation claims in relation to programme and quantum and has experience of providing consultancy advice in respect of a number of significant insurance claims in the UK and over-seas." Rupert has led restoration and conservation projects within two of the UK’s World Heritage Sites and Master Plan projects within two of England’s Treasures Houses as well as the Europa Nostra Grand Prix Prize winning restoration works undertaken at Strawberry Hill.”

Associates

Martin Norburn
(MRICS)

ASSOCIATE Martin has over 25 years’ experience of providing building services (M&E) quantity surveying services to a multitude of clients across a range of sectors within the construction industry.

After having worked at two other consultancy practices, including a secondment to a large M&E Services Contractor, Martin joined the company in 1999 and progressed to Associate in 2006. He is solely dedicated to carrying out the building services quantity surveying within the practice. Martin has significant experience within numerous sectors including, but not limited to, the commercial, education, heritage and residential sectors. He also provides building services quantity surveying cost advice / support to Contractors and Consultants who lack the necessary expertise.

Sam Dorman

ASSOCIATE Sam has over 15 years’ experience of providing quantity surveying services to a multitude of clients across a range of sectors within the construction industry.

After having worked at one other consultancy practice, Sam joined the company in 2013 and progressed to Associate in 2020. Sam has a range of experience within numerous sectors including, but not limited to, the commercial, hospitality and retail sectors. Sam is an extremely diligent person and has a thorough approach to all elements of work.

Daniel Johnson
(MRICS)

ASSOCIATE Dan has experience of providing project management, employer’s agent, and contract administrator services for a variety of clients, and has worked in a number of different sectors. Dan has over 15 years’ experience working in the industry and is a member of the RICS.

Dan joined Fanshawe in 2012 after working for an architecture practice specialising in residential projects. Since joining Fanshawe, Dan has worked with clients in the education, commercial, and residential sections, and has managed a number of heritage projects requiring understanding of the complex consent application process for listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments. Dan has experience of successfully managing projects from the inception and feasibility stages, through design, planning, tender and on-site construction periods, up to completion / handover including completion of the defect rectification period (RIBA Stages 0-7). Dan can assist the client with developing and refining their project brief, as well as advising of procurement options and recommending a strategy best suited to the project scope and clients’ key requirements.

EXPERTISE: Contract administration and employer’s agent services, pre and post contact project management services. Programme and risk management, advising on procurement options and developing strategies, coordination of planning and consent applications, effective management and coordination of the project team and consultants throughout the project duration, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Paul Mitchell

ASSOCIATE Paul has many years’ experience providing quantity surveying services to clients across a range of sectors within the construction industry. After graduating from University of Reading with a degree in Quantity Surveying and Construction Management, Paul joined Fanshawe in 2012 and steadily progressed to being made an Associate in 2022.Paul’s experience includes, education, heritage, commercial office fit out and residential projects as well as the preparation of Fire Insurance Valuations.When not working, Paul enjoys getting out on the golf course and attending the Emirates Stadium to support Arsenal Football Club.

Barry Rose
(FRICS)

CONSULTANT  Barry has over 30 years’ experience providing quantity surveying and cost consultancy advise to a diverse range of clients across the UK. Barry has extensive experience managing complex and challenging award winning projects in numerous Sectors including Education, Heritage, Public Access and Commercial for Universities, Schools, Historic Sites, Religious Institutions, Scientific and Research Facilities and Public Access gardens and structures, as well as high end residential and one off “special projects”.

Barry joined Fanshawe in 1989 and quickly gained experience and earned respect for large Clients with multiple sites and buildings, managing and delivering masterplans and strategic solutions. Barry stepped down as a Partner in May 2023 but remains working for Fanshawe as a Consultant.

Barry is recognised and constantly recommended for his ability, accuracy and commitment to delivering within the Clients overall budget.
